Handweaving
|

Handweaving has a long and noble tradition in Ireland.
Handwoven Tweed is a very evocative phrase, it means for me enduring quality, and it speaks of Tradition. Donegal Handwoven Tweed gives the phrase an even more special turn. In the North west of Ireland weavers, often small farmers, have been weaving the material known as Donegal Tweed for generations. Perhaps because industrialisation hardly touched Ireland did this tradition continued to thrive and develop. From this tweed material clothing of enduring quality is made. There is also the tradition of weaving blankets and throws which are featured here in this collection. It is I promise you a voyage of discovery!
I have over the years come to know a few handweavers from Donegal such as Raymond Sweeney, a weaver with Magee's of Donegal Town and Eddie Dohorty of Ardara in county Donegal. Both these men have been weaving since their youth, and as is typical they have other things to do as well as weaving. Raymond has sheep and cows, Eddie has a pub and fishes Salmon, among other things. But one thing I know, they know their trade and they are passionate about it.
