Art. 50
The Round Tower of Monasterboice
Part of the Tower remains, together with the famous High Crosses of Monasterboice.

The Celtic Christian Monastic settlement of Monasterboice, was one of the most important in Ireland. Proof of this are the two magnificent High Crosses and an unfinished High Cross. That Vikings also raided Monasterboice is also clear and the Round Tower was built as protection. When the monks knew the Vikings were coming they carried their valuables climbed a ladder leading to a door some ten or fifteen metres from the ground. When everything of value was in the Tower, including the Monks, then the ladder was pulled up and all were safe.
